Stunning Scenery – Peaks of Mindanao 0

Belonging to the pacific ring of fire, the islands in the Philippines were formed through volcanic eruption years ago. Some historians theorized that during the ice age, when the sea level was low, land bridges emerged and provided access to the archipelago. When the ice age ended, the land bridges were submerged back again and 7,107 islands of the Philippines were formed.

Mindanao, probably the most culturally diverse island in the Philippines, is also home for the tallest peak in the entire country. Mount Apo, specifically located in southern Mindanao, the mountain is 9,692 ft. high, and it provides a magnificent view of Davao City, Digos City and Kidapawan City. It is a potentially active stratovolcano with a flattened tip and three peaks capped by a 500-meter-wide volcanic crater.

I noticed within the past few years. The land formation has been a consistent itinerary for most educational trips. Being so isolated, the mountain has developed a bio diversity that has been luring many biologists to come and study the wildlife it has. There are a few wild Philippine Eagles thriving in the forest, but they are endangered of one day being gone from the wilds.

Furthermore, there a few numbers of the world’s biggest flower, Rafflesia scattered all over the slopes. Uniquely, the flower does not have stems, leaves and even true root. It is a parasitic plant that grows on the genus Tetrastigma as its sole host. The flower is noted for the unique smell it possesses somewhat like rotting flesh. These are just few things that make Mount Apo a good destination for an adventurous vacation.

Speaking of adventure, some regions around the mountain are made up of cliffs and steep edges, which proved to be worthy for professionals who indulge in a wall climbing or rappelling. The foot of the mountain also holds some hot springs, which have a potential for eco tourism. Along with the magnificently refreshing springs are some waterfalls like the Tudaya. A small jet of water shoots from a cliff that forms a basin then runs down the rest of the land going to the sea in a stream.

All in all, these gifts from nature comprise the entirety of Mount Apo National Park. But, apart from this wildlife, it’s the stunning scenery that tops over all the beauty that the mountain beholds. Being a very high peak, it shows the surrounding dense forests and nearby sea waters. Its isolation made the forest a place of communion with nature.
