Iligan City, the City of Majestic Waterfalls 0
Growing up in this small city of Iligan, I really saw how it changed as the years passed, how it improved and how it was still known to be the city of majestic waterfalls. Iligan is located in Northern Mindanao belonging to the province of Lanao del Norte, Region X.
It boasts the natural beauty of its waterfalls. Having more than 20 waterfalls, Iligan is truly blessed by nature. For me, an astonishing yet the most beneficial waterfall in Iligan is the Maria Cristina Falls. It is supplied with Water from Lake Lanao through the Agus River.
Having a strong surge of water, it can power up a hydroelectric power plant that supplies electricity to many regions in Mindanao. Agus River Hydroelectric Power Plant, allows visitors like me to witness the beauty of the cascading waterfall that is 320 feet long.
Luckily, I could see this natural beauty many times, and it never failed to amuse me every time I see it. From the viewing deck, there is evidence of abundant wildlife around the pool of Maria Cristina, as far as I remember, there were monkeys, birds and a lot of beautiful butterflies. The falls is divided into two by a stone at the middle which led to the falls to be called as the Twin Falls, and it is also the tallest waterfall in the Philippine archipelago.
A few kilometers of travel from Maria Cristina is the Tinago Falls. Tinago, meaning “hidden” is realistically a tropical paradise for people looking for a cold bath in a basin of a freshly flowing waterfall. It is located in a ravine below a cliff connected with the entrance by a staggering 425 step. I always find climbing up and down these steps would be a very good “eco-walk”. Going down to the foot of the waterfall is easy, but it’s really hard to imagine going up back a 425-step stair.
But, all of my efforts were eased by the astounding beauty of the waterfall itself. The depth of the basin was never recorded, which is why the entrance fee of 10. 00php (around 25 cents) has a life jacket included to ensure that my nature escapade will not turn into a disastrous accident. Atop the 425 stairs, I can already hear the sound of the falling water, and as I go deeper into the ravine, the temperature gets cooler and cooler every step.
Upon seeing the waterfall, I never expected that such hidden beauty of nature was discovered. Aside from the jackets included, I can also rent a bamboo raft the can bring people closer to the foot of the falls.
